We had our ace render crew in on Sunday working mostly on the outside this time. Roll call - Katrina, Ethan, Claire, Nic, Culina, Roisin and Mel came around in the morning and in the afternoon Peter H and Kristine came along. Mel took charge of the mixer while Nic and Katrina got up on the scaffold and worked on the eastern gable end. The kids busied themselves with the serious business of having fun.
We've been cruising through eBay looking for various second hand hardware lately without too much luck. But on Monday we won an auction for a kitchen which we went out to the other side of Melbourne to pick up that night. With the ute and a big hire trailer we managed to get it all loaded with help from the seller who was very helpful indeed. It was dark by the time we got home so the kitchen stayed on the ute and trailer. We woke at 6am Tuesday to the sound of rain. As we did not own a decent tarp, the whole thing was getting wet. So I took the car and drove around looking for tarps and at the 5th place I tried I found some pathetically small specimens and tried to cover it up with that. The rain continued. I knew that the longer it rained, the harder it would be to get the ute and trailer on to the block so I went straight out there. It was way too muddy for a big heavy trailer so I unhooked it and drove the fully loaded ute on, sliding all over the place like a drunken rally driver. Still it rained. I got all that I could off the ute single handed and then did the 100m trudge to the trailer and back with anything that was small enough to carry. Mid morning saw the arrival of Daz, internationally reknowned mastermind of Bogan Bingo. His car got about 5m before becoming stranded in the mud. Together we moved the remainder from the ute and the trailer with the exception of the really heavy stuff. This we transferred on to the ute and I slithered back to the house. All in all, we had 23mm of rain, which finally stopped at 11am. By that time I had been drenched for a few hours and was very thankful when Natasha arrived with some dry clothes and lunch. In the afternoon Daz installed a lot of insulation and we put in some more sizalation too. The ceiling is slowly getting there. Today I've been working on our composting toilet, digging a trench - yes it's back to digging again. Deja vu. I also loosely assembled some of the kitchen so that I could get some sense of achievement from the whole rain debacle. With a bit of adjustment here and there it will make a brilliant kitchen. I can really imagine moving in now! Tonight I went in to the city to pick up another eBay purchase, 5 internal doors. All matching and in good nick. I'll have to learn how to hang doors next. Who'd have thought?
