It's been an interesting time - we've been getting so excited about getting near the end of the build (and I have been so eager to finish and move in) that our planning and forward thinking has been a little lacking. I am working tomorrow (Saturday) so took today (Friday) off, got to sleep in a little and then go out to the house building with Peter on a spectacular September day.
Working together on the house today gave us a good opportunity to talk
through all the things that need to be done before we are really ready
to render - and there is heaps! But it's a good reality check. I liken it to when I have 'nearly'
finished a big report for a client, or when I used to publish a
magazine: just when I think I'm nearly there, and all the
time-consuming bulk of the work is done, I remember that all the fiddly
little things at the end take a LONG time. Same with our house! So
tonight we are doing a more detailed plan so we can organise ourselves,
the equipment we need, and the person-power we need and sleep better
for it!
I am 24 weeks pregnant now, and am noticing my physical limits, despite my usual desire to work like a maniac. I haven't liked working with some power tools like the circular saw, but have discovered that I am a bit of a gun with the staple gun, and we got a few walls prepared with the chicken wire stapled on to some walls, ready to be stuffed. The gun is nice and light, and Peter and I work really well together tensioning the wire and securing it in place.
We also went to visit our local sand and soil supplier, as our earth is so full of silt, it is unlikely to be a very useful addition to our render. We have been so blessed with honest, helfpul locals, and Bob Scott was no exception. So with several different types of soil and clay mixes complements of Scotts, we are ready to start making some render and testing different combinations.
In the meantime, we are planning to have a fun-filled wall stuffing weekend, in lovely Merrimu sunshine.
