Rain & Mud - nice... PDF Print E-mail

It rained.  After an unbelievably dry spring, we have had 80mm in 2 days which has turned our dustbowl into a mudbath.  Friday was mostly a write-off and Saturday was unworkable all afternoon due to the rain and mud.  So it was a forced break in building - this is a first.  We'd like to get our bearers complete by next Wednesday but the rain has changed that picture.  Of course we needed the rainfall badly so watching it from home wasn't too bad.

Sunday has been good, Natasha has been hammering (with both left and right hands somehow!), laminating the timber together, and I've set on doing the trickiest 3 bearers.  We did want a uniquely shaped house and not just a square box and this is where it all gets a little tricky.  Fixing multiple bearers on one little 100mm x 100mm stump is quite a challenge.  We have things going off on all kinds of different angles which looks great when I've worked out how to do it.

I managed to put some forethought into the procedure this time, and established that working from the inside out makes good sense.  It's certainly making walking around the site easier.  It's hard enough lugging 6m pieces of timber around in the ever present wind without having to weave around obstacles.

The weather forecast is for a return to the normal dry conditions for the next few days so I'll hit the accelerator where I can.  That's easier to do now - the progress is visually obvious and very satisfying to see.  Great for motivation.
