We have placed the last 6 stumps in the ground today. After a big
Saturday with help from Matt Noyes - man of many talents - and Peter
Hosking we nailed 17 in a day. That set us up for an easier run to the
line today although we saved the perplexing ones until last in the name
of progress. As we packed all of our holes down with earth and didn't
really mark them (couldn't really settle on a good technique for this)
we had to rely on measurement to position holes for re-drilling. This
left a few slightly off the mark. But we used a bit of deduction and
no small amount of additional digging and probing to find the concrete
at the bottom. Not ideal but effective in the end.
The final result is that after 6 weeks (we first marked our holes on a
Sunday 6 weeks ago) we have all of our stumps in. A small jig was
required with Natasha upon the final tamping of the final stump and
then we headed home mulling over the next part of the job - cutting the
stumps to a consistent level. We are weighing up a few options for
this, such as laser level or water level or very sharp ninja stars.
And some ninjas. Hmmm OK maybe not the last option, probably the laser
and circular saw.
Once we are done with this we can get the termite barriers on and then
the bearers on. The house site already resembles a bunch of rooms more
than the bomb site it has been for most of the last 6 weeks. So we're
very happy. We'd be still about halfway I think if not for all the
weekend help we've had, so thanks very much to everyone who has come
out to help!
