Well it's been an interesting week. We contacted one of our local newspapers to see if they wanted to do a story on our house. They did, and in fact last Tuesday's front page featured a photo of us and the house, along with a story on page 3. We don't have a link yet, but hope to have one soon, so you can have a read. We wanted to spread the word more locally, and judging by the hits on our website lately, we think it's generated some interest, which was our goal.18_August.jpg

Peter has been back in his home town of Wellington in NZ for a well-earned rest and friends/family 5 day catch up (got to love flights using frequent flier points), arriving back last night, and with the incredible winds we had on the weekend, we were hoping there would be no damage to the house. I am nursing a crook lower back (pregnancy related, not a building injury) and so went for a quick look at the house on Saturday to make sure everything was ok (rather than the work I had planned). It was all ok on Saturday morning, but I think 2 days and nights of mega gale-force wind was just a bit much, and 2 sheets had blown off the roof and made it to our neighbours property. The two sheets that came off were from the end, where it wasn't quite finished, so the wind was able to get up underneath it.

We are so thankful that no-one was hit or injured by it, and that it didn't hit and damage any property nearby. One small straw bale wall that had not been tensioned has also come down, but it is easily fixed, so overall we haven't been hit too hard. I'm proud to say our house is very well built and very strong, and can withstand some serious wind! I reckon if it hasn't come down so far, it will stand the test of time well into the rest of this century.... and beyond (i'm not jinxing things in saying that am I?)

I had to laugh, the newspaper that featured us last week had a comment underneath the article asking "Would you feel safe in a straw house?", asking readers to comment on their website. I know what my answer is!
