I had a visit from an old friend today, or maybe son/daughter of old friend because he/she was not so big. Or too small for that matter. As mentioned in a previous blog, I came across a huntsman lurking in our portaloo and this must be just the spot for these beasties. I was just yesterday thinking about how I haven't seen any spiders for a while. This one hitchhiked over to the house on a deckchair and stayed put long enough for a portrait - it didn't smile but it did look at the camera.
Last Saturday saw the completion of the rafters, the roofline is now very much revealed. As are the areas in and around the house. The deck is looking like a brilliant place to be in summer and winter and the kitchen promises to be full of natural light. I could go on, but I have to leave some surprises for me and you. With the rafters done I moved on to the bracing which is the second-to-last page of our specific structural details. This is a pretty brief job and I knocked it off in a couple of days so that by the end of the day I'm ready to move on to roof purlins. Last page of structural stuff! I had a half day on Sunday and I went to meet with a plumber. This has been serious subject of procrastination for me. Because I know very little about plumbing, I've been scared of getting into the details of plumbing and committing to anything - in case I make another multi-thousand dollar mistake. But there's a time for action and it's now! What I don't understand, I can ask. What I don't know I'll learn. I already have a far better grasp of it after the meeting. We have had a number of budget blow-outs. Many of them have been related to the rock in our ground. Others are down to straying from our self imposed building rules and others to inexperience. The upshot is that we'll run out of money and borrowing capacity soon after we reach lock-up. We hope that soon after this we can get a certificate of occupancy and continue building as we live there. That's the plan. So the finished product will take a little longer but we still hope to be in there before too long, even if we'll be living in a building site! I have a funny feeling in my stomach as I think about this, and I'm pretty sure it's not the nachos.
