More floor

It has been a windy day today, again, but it was a southerly which means it has been a nice cool temperature to work in.  Doing this stage by myself is OK but I've had to go slow for safety's sake.  At least it feels less perilous with so much floor to catch me should I slip.  Which I don't intend to do.  The wind may have other ideas.  Should anyone give me the old "windy Wellington" line when I tell them where I grew up I shall have to laugh most zephyrously in their face.Peter_thru_netting.jpg

Hard to comprehend

Yesterday's weather was certainly extreme enough to damage our house but it seems like nothing compared to what people around the state of Victoria are going though. It's hard to comprehend the loss and death that has occurred and we've been so moved by how the people of Victoria support each other in the face of such horror and so much unknown.  The bushfires came nowhere near us but we did get smoke, lightning and then a cool change that dropped the temperature 30 degrees in 15 hours!  It's unlike anything I've ever seen before and I don't mind never seeing it again. Ouch

It's a very exciting day today.  We have received our flooring and insulation so it's time to create some nice flat safe surfaces.  We went for an early morning start to try and beat the predicted heat today.  We hired some floor clamps from the local hire place, dropped in for some adhesive, as I had forgotten to arrange to get this.  It was fantastic to stack the flooring sheets up on the joists when they arrived and just looking at it I knew that getting around on the build was about to get much easier.yay_for_the_flooring.jpg  So as conditions worsened - the temperature had reached 40˚c (104˚ f) by 11am and the wind was gusting up to about 70 or 80kph (50mph) - we tried to just get on a couple of sheets before going home to wait out the heat and wind.

These times

There are times when I wonder if we are a bit mad. We've borrowed more money to finish the house. This is part of our plan (although we had hoped to have saved more than we did). Bendigo Bank is so fabulous, it's completely transformed my attitude to banks, and we can't recommend them highly enough. Personal banking actually exists. Big thanks to Vince and Sue at Bendigo Bank Sth Melb.
Tradesman tan

It has been a sunny day today and despite lots of sunblock I'm getting my sun tan in stripes.  Forearms and lower legs. The rest of me is as pasty as ever.  It was a long day today and it was good to get home and freshen up - sweat, sunblock and sawdust is an itchy combination. Having_a_dinner_break.jpg By the end of the day I had the final nogging in place and have started to trim the ends of the joists to be uniform for when the flooring goes on.

Tom and Captain Najork

There's a kids book called "How Tom Beat Captain Najork and His Hired Sportsmen" in which Tom, the hero, does a lot of fooling around and teetering in high places.  Walking around on the joists has felt decidedly teetery, and at times I have been bathed in teeterescence.  This effect diminishes with each nogging we install and the joist installation takes on a new stability.  Which means walking around is much less precarious and I'm not really too sad about that.  When the wind gusts, which is most of the time, teetering loses it's shine.Joist_Noggings.jpg

The wet face washer has been my very best friend this week. Works wonders on a hot body, I was using it today on the build as well. Man, that heat! We slept in our tent last night (thanks for the idea Tim and Trine) - it was quite lovely, under the stars and all. On our verandah. At least 15 degrees cooler than inside the convent that's for sure.Attaching_noggins.jpg
Be afraid

It's another 44 degree day today so there's no work happening.  However I did pop out to the block to water the few trees we've planted (they're suffering greatly in the heat) and put up a sign to show visitors and tradespeople which lot is ours, as the last one blew off.  Oo-er.

There's a lesson in what I'm about to tell you.  If you can work out what that lesson is, please tell me.Scene_of_the_crime.jpg

Joist about there

An early start to work today to get ahead of the forecast heatwave, and that will be the story of the week as the heat remains.  It was a good day and there now only 2 joists to cut and fit.  These ones are around the position of our compostable toilet and I'm just not confident that I have all of the dimensions right yet.  I imagine Treebeard in my ear saying "don't be hasty".  Tempting to just whack them on though! It was crisp and cool this morning at 7am at Possumtail Run - so beautiful. It soon got warmer, and warmer, but always the wind to cool us down. Not one cloud did we see today. We've had a ball - we attached 29 joists today, and have only 15 to go. We do love just hanging out together - this afternoon we were sitting precariously up on the highest joists together, hammering our joists into position, smiling and singing. Managed some dancing too today.
