It's funny how my memory has conveniently forgotten just how cold it gets out here in winter. Brrrrr! We are thanking our lucky stars that we are not spending another very cold, very windy winter building outside. It's lovely to lay in bed at night snug and warm listening to the rain and wind. However, we are in serious need of a slow combustion wood heater (looking in ebay at the moment) to get some warmth into the house. At the same time, we have been trying to fill in the gaps where draughts are coming in to reduce the cold air flow inside! It's so cold that the final coat of render Peter has applied to the office/storeroom has still not dried after over a week.
We are pretty excited about the room being finished (ie walls being dry) so that we can set up Peter's tools properly in the end/storage bit of the room, and get my office stuff out of Peter's music studio, into my office. We are also pretty excited about getting well again! Having a cold in this weather has put our building aspirations on hold, though there are lots of little things that we can do inside whilst we're recuperating. One new addition to the studio has made a big difference - our little window that shows off Long Forest like a picture frame. It's Peter's first go at installing a window with some glass we bought locally, and so far so good. Certainly a much cheaper option than buying a window ready made (about $350 cheaper!!). Every time we walk into the room we are struck by how much the new window changes the light, look and feel of the studio - divine! In other news, Peter has started on his mission to get some casual carpentry/labouring work, as the contracting work in sound (his usual gig) has been a bit quiet, and we need to some 'balance' with our finances! This will be a whole new world for Peter, and he is really looking forward to someone else giving him direction and being the boss, rather than having to be his own boss and make all the decisions. We've also had an article published in the magazine 'Earth Garden ', and part two will be in the next edition. We love Earth Garden, so we are pretty excited that they have printed our story for all to see - they operate out of a straw bale office in Trentham which is not far from here. It's amazing how much hot water we are getting from our solar unit, even when it's 10 degrees maximum - as long as there is sunshine, we get hot water. It's looking less windy today, so it might be a good day to walk around the block planning where our bare-rooted fruit trees will go...... til next time, keep warm!
