Wow, what a blast of a weekend. Being part of the Sustainable House Day has been such a fantastic experience for us. In years gone by we have visited other houses and got a lot out of seeing what other people have done, and today we were able to open our doors (and minds and hearts) for others to experience. When I applied to the ATA to be part of this year's day, I had a few agendas, one of which was use the impending deadline to spur us on and get some additional work done on the house.... that was certainly accomplished. Just at the right time, we've been able to finish many half-finished projects, and other things that have just been crying out to be done - like our driveway!

We were soooo excited this morning. We spent yesterday cleaning up the house and in particular, putting everything away in its place now that we have our new 2nd hand cupboards in place - so early this morning we had our ATA t-shirts and name tags on ready to go!

One of the things the ATA had said to us was that they would find it hard to get volunteers to help us, as we weren't Melbourne metro, but I assured them that this would not be a problem and we would get our own volunteers. In fact we had our "A" team - Merav, Aygun, Matt, Ivan, Jo and Rick. All of them have helped us build this house, and it was brilliant to have Aygun, Matt and Ivan to very capably take people on tours of the house (as well as Peter and myself of course) simply because they had so much knowledge from helping us build. I loved being able to hear them talk about their direct experiences of building, and in the process I was reminded of many things I had forgotten.

It was quite theraputic for Peter to take the tours today, he was in his element, and it was a great way for him to celebrate and recognise his accomplishments in building the house. We also got to meet some fantastic people, and hopefully we will be able to assist quite a few budding straw balers in the building of their homes, woohooo!

All in all we had 83 people through the house. Many were also very appreciative, thanking us for opening our 'not yet finished' home and it felt great to know that we have inspired some people today.... it's a total win-win for everyone.

1. Well done
Congrats on a job well done. It is so exciting to show what you have acheived to other interested people. I have no doubt that you would have inspired so many people helping them to build their own dream. Well done to you all.

2. Thanks!
What a fantastic opportunity - we're even more excited to begin our own adventure - I did a little write up of our visit so I could refer to all your good ideas in the future - http://oh-my-la.blogspot.com/ 2010/09/sustainable-house-day- part-2-peter.html

Keep the pics coming!
