I remember the feeling we had coming back from outings - before we moved in to our house - of driving home past the turnoff to our block of land. We’d drive past wishing we were going that way, going home to our straw bale house. It’s worth remembering that we’re living our dream now, especially when I look at the things that we still need to do. The good thing is that when we complete another small thing, I get a huge sense of achievement without the time pressure we had when we were pushing to get in. Having said that, we don’t want to be forever finishing this build. It’s an easy trap to fall into. Window_seat.jpg

Recent jobs have been fun to do, fitting the remaining doors in the west end of the house, so that if we wish to use the toilet down there we can even close the door! And both bedrooms have doors fitted, which gives us flexibility to make more noise and control the temperature in individual rooms. On the subject of room temperatures, the main factor (in my opinion) in keeping the house at a good temperature when it gets cold overnight seems to be the amount of wind. It’s been still lately and the house has preformed well. When the wind blows however, we are susceptible to quicker heat loss. All of this suggests weak points where drafts can get in, possibly around the underside of the eaves. Sounds like a job for a render fix – someday.

We inherited a lawnmower lately from Natasha’s Uncle Alan which has given us all great joy. For some reason, I love mowing lawns. Natasha loves not having negotiate tall weeds to get to our vegie patch and Dylan loves having more area to run around on. And it looks much better of course. It’s worth bearing in mind the relationship between the inside and outside of a house. When one works well the other can often be enhanced. We may not have a machine capable of tackling the other 2 acres of our block yet but it’s nice to get to the areas that we use the most.

So it’s nice to be living the dream. Sometimes I just forget.
