As I write this we have plumbers up on the roof connecting our wetback to our hot water service and - more importantly - attempting to fix our ongoing hot water issue.
OK, so the hot water issue first. Since we moved in we've had to wrangle, run around the house and hope to get hot water out of our cylinder. It's a roof mounted solar system and we know that it generates plenty of hot water, but getting that hot water out of our taps has been fraught with failure since March 2010. Generally we can get it working by turning on multiple hot taps at once but that sometimes doesn't work and it's a barely lukewarm shower or nothing. Not much fun in winter. It all stems from the tempering valve, a device which is supposed to add a little cold water to stop us from getting scalded by the variable heat of a solar system. But due to differing pressures of our hot and cold supply, this has not been working (but newsflash! It appears that it's not a gravity fed system so there should not be different pressures!). So we hope that the plumbers will work some plumby magic and give us the hot water delivery we've been dreaming of since we moved in.
Having the wetback fitted and connected will allow us to heat our water on cold and cloudy days with our slow combustion fire. We bought the fire from Insolar (www.insolar.com.au - these guys have been very helpful and supportive to us) over a year ago but we didn't want to install the wetback until the pumbing was working properly. So we are hoping to address both issues in one go. The plumbers are still working at it, dare I hope that I may get hot water by just turning on the tap this evening? Golly gee!
