Well it's been a busy few weeks, and now it's all coming together! I have just pulled myself away from the amazingly warm and snazzy slow combustion wood heater which we had installed today. Oh my goodness, it's an absolute revelation..... and all due to Peter's very generous parents Sue and Ian who bought it for us. It's safe to say that most of the new stuff we have in the house is funded by them, for eg our clothes line and gas cook top. Fire.jpg

Gosh we are such lucky duckies. All of a sudden the house feels complete, not in a finished kind of way, but in a heart kind of way. The kitchen is the centre of the house, but the wood heater feels like the heart of it.  It was very quiet in the house, and in the middle of writing this I went to check, and yes, Peter had fallen asleep on the couch in front of the fire. Heavenly!

Everything we've been working on suddenly feels like it's coming together. Our fabulous friend Ray (who has a recycled timber yard) found some great shelving units and cupboards in a house he was getting timber out of (demolition) and arranged for us to take them off the owner's hands before it went to the tip (for a slab of beer no less!). So we have put our attention on the inside of the house to get the rooms ready for the shelving and cupboards.

This has involved rendering a little bit in the pantry and some larger expanses (walls) in the WIR and store-room. Now all we have to do is finish them off by preparing and then painting the plasterboard walls and we are ready to get the shelving in. Peter_sponging_store_room.jpgWe can’t wait to have out WIR finished so we can get the rest of our clothes and things out of boxes, and get the pantry complete with proper shelving! Wooohoooo! So this, along with the new wood heater, is very exciting stuff for us.

Another exciting thing is the Sustainable House Day coming up on Sunday 12th September. We can’t wait to show people around the house and talk about sustainable building. For those who have not heard of this event, it's a great way to see what others have done in either retro-fitting, building from scratch or rennovating their homes. We applied to be part of it, and have been accepted. So basically we are opening up our house for people to come and see, and taking them on tours, answering questions, providing info etc. We have gained a great deal from seeing other people's houses at this event over the years, so we are very happy to be able to give back and make a difference to others.

I can feel the wood heater calling me, I must go!

2. I know what you mean!
I grew up with one of these (slow combustion heaters), and a slow combustion stove too. Every other form of heating seems just a little bit soulless! Enjoy :)
