We started building in October 2008 and since that time we've been subject to the vagaries of the weather when trying to get on to the land by vehicle. At times this has meant taking on a little rally driving, which I've improved at quite a bit. Sometimes it's meant attaching a rope to the ute to pull visitors out from the mud. Once we needed to get the ute pulled out by another car. Embarrassing! Although we've adapted to it as best as we can, we've been longing for more reliable access. When Mum and Dad visited in March they saw the rivers flowing past the front door and offered to pay for a driveway. Of course we accepted!
Finally, half a year later, we booked it in. Yesterday morning we went out with some lime and marked the route for the driveway to take. An hour or so later Bob, David and Mike Scott (Scott's Sand and Soil Supplies) turned up with their heavy machinery looking like they meant business. With a front end loader David moved any impeding mounds of rocky earth that had been there since we put the stumps in nearly two years ago. With a cleaner slate to work with he then cleared the weeds and grass and let that dry. Although we had rain overnight, we also had incredible winds that not only kept me awake but also dried the earth out brilliantly.
This morning the lads turned up again with some locally sourced gravel and dumped it, then started grading it out. I've had a lot to get done but I found myself making any excuse to go and check progress. Load after load was dropped off and our driveway took shape quickly. At the end of the day we found ourselves with a driveway that looks great in front of the house and paves the way for us to embark on more tree planting, now that we know that the heavy machinery has done its job.
It's also a great preparation for Sustainable House Day this Sunday when we expect to have a large number of people on the land and in the house. It's a driveway that gives access to the north and south sides of the house with a good turning circle and even a path to the clothesline! I never thought I'd be so excited about a driveway but I just want to go for a drive in order to drive off and on the land. Thanks Mum and Dad!
